Customer financing categories

The main ways businesses offer financing to customers.

Point-of-sale financing, self-managed payment plans and BNPL-style programs all solve the same problem differently — who holds the credit risk, and who runs collections.

Point-of-sale financing

What is point-of-sale financing?

Point-of-sale financing lets a customer split the cost of a purchase into installment payments at checkout, while the business is typically paid in full (minus fees) up front by the financing provider.

It is common for higher-ticket purchases — equipment, services, home improvement, elective care — where the full price up front is a barrier to a customer saying yes. Approval, terms and funding timing are set by the financing provider, not by the business offering it.

Commonly explored when

  • Average ticket size is high enough that price is a sticking point
  • Competitors already offer a "pay over time" option at checkout
  • Sales are lost specifically at the price-objection stage

Payment plans

How is a payment plan different from point-of-sale financing?

A payment plan is typically set up and managed directly between the business and the customer. Point-of-sale financing routes the credit decision and the risk to a third-party provider instead.

Businesses that self-manage payment plans carry the collection risk themselves. Routing financing through a third-party provider shifts that risk and the underwriting work off the business, in exchange for a fee built into the provider's terms.

Commonly explored when

  • In-house payment plans have led to collection issues
  • The business wants to offer financing without extending its own credit
  • Recurring billing needs to run automatically rather than be tracked manually

Buy-now-pay-later

Is buy-now-pay-later (BNPL) only for retail and e-commerce?

No. While BNPL is best known from online retail checkout, similar installment financing is offered by providers across home services, healthcare, automotive and other industries with higher average purchase amounts.

The mechanics are similar across industries — an application at the point of sale, a quick approval decision, and the provider taking on repayment risk — but program terms, approval rates and fees vary meaningfully by provider and industry.

Commonly explored when

  • Businesses outside traditional retail considering financing for the first time
  • Comparing multiple financing providers for approval rates in a specific industry
  • Adding financing as an option alongside existing payment methods

FAQ

Common questions about customer financing.

Does Truidian lend money to my customers?

No. Truidian is not a lender and does not provide customer financing directly. Truidian helps businesses identify and connect with participating third-party financing providers. Any financing offered to a customer is subject to that provider’s approval and terms.

Is customer financing the same as business capital?

No. Business Capital is funding for your business. Customer Financing lets your customers pay for what they buy from you over time, through a separate third-party financing provider. Truidian doesn't provide either directly.

Does offering customer financing cost my business anything?

Financing providers typically charge a merchant fee on financed transactions, similar in structure to a card-processing fee. Fees and terms vary by provider and will be disclosed before you engage.

What happens if a customer misses a financed payment?

With true point-of-sale financing, the financing provider — not your business — holds the repayment risk and manages collections, since they made the credit decision and funded the purchase.

Can a new or smaller business offer customer financing?

It depends on the provider. Some financing providers set minimum transaction-volume or time-in-business requirements; others are built for smaller or newer businesses. Truidian can help identify which participating providers fit.
