Purchase-order financing

How does purchase-order financing work?

Purchase-order financing helps a business fulfill a confirmed customer order by funding the supplier cost of goods the business can’t pay for up front.

It’s generally designed for businesses that resell or distribute finished goods rather than manufacturers producing from raw materials. The provider typically pays the supplier directly for the goods, and is repaid — along with its fee — once the end customer pays for the completed order.

PO financing is often paired with invoice factoring: the financing covers the supplier cost before delivery, and once the order is delivered and invoiced, the resulting invoice can be factored to extend the cash-flow bridge through collection.

Commonly explored when

  • A confirmed order exceeds the cash the business has on hand
  • Suppliers require payment before goods ship, but the customer pays on terms
  • Distributors, wholesalers and resellers of finished goods taking on larger orders

What to know

What matters most for PO financing.

  • Confirmed order required

Financing is tied to a specific, verified purchase order from a creditworthy customer — not speculative inventory.

  • Supplier paid directly

The provider typically pays the supplier on the business’s behalf rather than advancing cash to the business itself.

  • Repayment at delivery

The provider is repaid, plus fees, once the order is delivered and the customer pays — often through a paired factoring arrangement.

  • Margin matters

Because fees come out of the deal’s margin, PO financing tends to fit orders with enough margin to absorb the cost.

FAQ

Common questions about PO financing.

Is Truidian a purchase-order financing company?

No. Truidian is a business solutions company, not a lender. Truidian helps businesses identify and connect with third-party purchase-order financing providers. Approval and terms are set by the participating provider.

Can purchase-order financing be combined with invoice factoring?

Yes, this is a common pairing. PO financing covers the supplier cost before an order ships, and once the order is delivered and invoiced, factoring can extend funding through collection from the customer.

What types of businesses typically use PO financing?

It’s most common among distributors, wholesalers and resellers of finished goods that need to fund supplier costs for a confirmed order, rather than manufacturers building from raw materials.

Does the margin on an order matter for PO financing?

Yes. Because fees are paid out of the transaction’s margin, providers generally look for deals with enough margin to support the cost of financing.
